From July 11 to 18, 2008, Montreal will host the
7th Esperanto Congress of the Americas (TAKE7), whose theme this year
is
Ecosystems, languages, cultures:
diversity for a sustainable development in the Americas.
Organized by the Quebec
Esperanto Society and Espéranto-UQAM,
TAKE7 will bring together some 200 participants from more than 15
countries, who will use a common language to communicate: Esperanto.
Through lectures, debates, discussion groups, and practical workshops,
participants will develop proposals for actions that promote a fair and
sustainable development, based on conserving and valorizing ecological,
linguistic, and cultural diversity.

While thousands of species disappear every year,
fragilizing our planet's ecosystems and diminishing our quality of
life, more than half of the world's languages could become extinct
by the end of this century.* Many cultures would then have disappeared,
along with whole systems of values, ways of interaction with the
environment, as well as the knowledge base which is essential for
humanity to meet the challenges we are already facing.
TAKE7 is the seventh edition of the Esperanto Congress
of the Americas series of conferences, whose goal is to
explore important themes by using Esperanto as the communication tool
of choice. These events are also an opportunity to assess the state of
Esperanto in the Americas and of the values promoted by Esperanto
speakers: democracy, transnational education, linguistic rights and
diversity, freedom, and a culture of peace.
*The year 2008 has been proclaimed International Year of Languages by
the United Nations General Assembly.
