Program of the 7th Esperanto Convention of the Americas

(TAKE-7 : sepa TutAmerika Kongreso de Esperanto)

Ecosystems, languages, cultures: diversity for a sustainable development in the Americas

A preliminary calendar is now available

Please note that the main language of the seventh Esperanto Convention of the Americas will be Esperanto.

The chosen theme for the seventh Esperanto Convention of the Americas reflects a growing awareness of environmental issues and the protection of the world's linguistic and cultural heritages. Based on the conclusions of the General Assembly of the United Nations, which affirmed that "languages constitute a strategic factor of progress towards peaceful coexistence between peoples of the world, sustainable development and a harmonious relationship between the global and the local context", TAKE-7 will attempt to highlight the links which exist between the conservation of the environment and of biodiversity, the preservation of languages and cultures, and the well-being of populations. In particular, the knowledge and experience of the indigenous peoples of the Americas will serve as an starting point to several of the discussions, meetings, and workshops at the convention.  It is therefore worth noting the participation of José Carlos Morales Morales (Costa Rica), member of the UN's Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Rubén Ortiz Hernández (Guatemala), director of the eco-tourism cooperative AgroETour, and Mark Fettes (Canada), researcher in linguistic ecology at Simon Fraser University.

The convention will be an occasion for the Esperanto-speakers of the Americas both to assess the past progress in favor of equitable and democratic international communication and to develop strategies for the future. It will discuss, among other things, Esperanto as a medium for promoting an environment of intercultural understanding as part of the education of world citizens, and of the pedagogical potential of Esperanto in the learning of other languages.  The contributions of José Antonio Vergara (Chile), commisser for the advancement of science at the World Esperanto Association, Maritza Gutierrez González (Cuba), member of the Americas Commission for Esperanto, and Humphrey Tonkin (USA), president emeritus of the University of Hartford, will provide a framework for these discussions.

Among the activities proposed for conventioners are also : various guided tours (TOHU, Biodome, Metro Art, ...) in which participants will discover Montreal through the themes of the convention; three evening shows, bringing to life the diversity of languages and cultures with, among others, the multilingual singer Jean-Marc Leclercq (France); and a series of workshops on ecological and educational dance. Video conferences, online reports, and chat sessions with "virtual" participants from across the planet will enrich the convention programming and demonstrate the pertinence of using Esperanto as an auxiliary language for communication on the internet.
